How to Carve a Pumpkin into a Halloween Jack O'Lantern

But the process of pumpkin carving can turn out to be much more challenging than you might expect, whether you're an experienced artist or a beginner. Of course, you can opt for a no-carve pumpkin or one with a drawn face to avoid this. However, there's nothing quite as satisfying as crafting your own classic pumpkin lantern for Halloween.

STEP 1. START WITH THE RIGHT PUMPKIN
Choose a fresh pumpkin with a sturdy stem, free of dark spots, and a flat bottom to prevent rolling during carving.
STEP 2. CUT THE LID FROM THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP
Cutting the "lid" from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the collapse of the pumpkin's sidewalls later on.
STEP 3. IF CARVING FROM THE TOP, ANGLE THE LID
This way, it won't fall inside the pumpkin when you place it back on top, as it might with a straight top-down cut.
STEP 4. SCOOP OUT ALL THE FLESH
You can use a spoon for this process, but an ice cream scoop works even better. Thin out the inner wall of the "face" side of the pumpkin to about 3 cm thick, making it easier to puncture the skin.
STEP 5. BEGIN BY DRAWING YOUR DESIGN ON PAPER
You can start by drawing the desired size of the face on a piece of paper and use it as a template.
