Crystal Growing Experiment

To grow salt crystals, you need to be patient! After preparing the saturated solution, you will need to wait. Crystals take time to grow, and it takes several days.

Prepare a space for placing a tray or plate. The water needs time to evaporate, and you should try to minimize the movement or pushing of the plate!

You will need:

  • Table salt
  • Water
  • Cup (jar) and spoon
  • Paper and scissors
  • Plate
  • Tray or cutting board

! Tip: You can use colored paper to create a snowflake, but the main thing is that it should not be glossy, otherwise the salt will not be able to adhere to its slippery surface.

How to Make Snowflakes with Salt Crystals - Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Cut snowflakes out of paper

At this stage, use your imagination and a creative approach. Create a snowflake to your liking. Think in advance where you will hang it and choose the optimal size.

Step 1: Cut snowflakes out of paper

Step 2: Prepare the salt solution

Take a jar and pour boiling water into it (it is important that the jar does not burst due to temperature changes - it should be at room temperature, and you must pour boiling water VERY slowly). Salt dissolves easily in hot water.

Dissolve table salt in hot water

Take a spoon and start adding salt, stirring it until completely dissolved. Your task is to add the maximum amount of salt that can dissolve in water. We managed to add 12 teaspoons of salt to our liter jar.

Step 3: Place the snowflake in the salt solution for 1-2 days

Pour the solution into a convenient deep plate and immerse the snowflake in it so that it is completely underwater. Now we wait for a minimum of one day and observe how our snowflake is covered with salt crystals.

If time allows, leave the snowflake in the solution until all the water has evaporated.

Step 4: Take out the snowflake and let it dry on a tray

After 1-2 days, when the crystals have grown, take out the snowflake and lay it on a flat surface to dry completely.

Leave the snowflake on the tray to dry completely

Our snowflake is ready!

Try to conduct this experiment with children, and we are sure that following our step-by-step instructions, you will definitely succeed!
